- Title
Nigeria: Shell's Exit Plan Under Fire.
- Abstract
Advocacy groups are urging Shell to halt its plans to divest assets from Nigeria's Niger Delta region until proper cleanup and decommissioning of its infrastructure is complete. A report by the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations accuses Shell of trying to avoid responsibility for oil spills in the region. Shell announced plans to sell its onshore operations to a local consortium for $2.4 billion, stating that it would allow them to focus on more lucrative offshore businesses. However, concerns have been raised about the pollution issue and the potential negative example it sets for other multinationals operating in Nigeria.
