- Abstract
Introduction: According to the World Health Organization, anxiety is considered a public health problem and requires innovative coping strategies, such as the use of chatbots, which are artificial intelligence capable of simulating dialogue with users. Objective: To investigate information on the use of chatbots in coping with anxiety. Method: This is an integrative literature review. The guiding question was based on the PICO strategy. The guiding question was: "What evidence is available in the literature on the use of chatbots in coping with anxiety?" The search took place in March 2022 in the following databases: Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature. Results: 592 articles were identified in the searches used in the databases selected to conduct the review, 22 duplicate publications were excluded and, after reading the titles, abstracts and descriptors, 11 articles were analyzed in full. According to the articles analyzed, chatbots can offer content related to guided self-assessment and tips for the following areas: stress, anxiety, depression, sleep and self-esteem. The use of chatbots in mental health can engage users and significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress levels. Final considerations: There is a potential impact of chatbots as a low-cost transdiagnostic intervention in coping with anxiety that can be widely disseminated to improve the mental health of millions of people around the world.
