What are contraindications to IUDs?
- Authors
Paladine, Heather L.; Blenning, Carol E.; Judkins, Dolores Zegar
- Abstract
The article provides information about intra-uterine devices (IUD). The use of intrauterine devices is not contraindicated for women with HIV/AIDS, multiple sexual partners, previous actinomyces colonization, and most types of fibroids or previous ectopic pregnancy. Modern IUDs have a monofilament tail which has not been linked to higher rates of pelvic inflammatory disease. IUDs do not increase the risk of complications among immunosuppressed HIV-positive women. Significant uterine enlargement can increase the risk of IUD expulsion.
