- Abstract
Presents an introduction to the issue of juvenile justice. The articles in this special issue reflect the changing nature of the juvenile justice system. The major change in juvenile statutes has been transfer to adult courts, and three papers address issues related to transfer. The article discusses the history of juvenile law in United States, the fall of the rehabilitative ideal and juvenile crime. It also suggested some changes to the juvenile justice system. Many juvenile courts still neglect the due process rights basic to an adversary system and studies show that both judges and lawyers still believe in a juvenile justice system that is based on rehabilitation. Thus, any reform efforts should take into account the potential resistance of actors within the system.
