- Abstract
Not many believed that the writing and production of a commentary on the whole Bible by national authors from the evangelical community of Eastern Europe was possible, but in October 2016 such a commentary was presented in Kyiv (Ukraine). It is called the Slavic Bible Commentary (SBC) and it has 94 national contributors from the former USSR. This article provides on overview over the history of the project and explains the need for it. It will explain why this commentary is designed for preachers and lay ministers and how it attempts to answer contemporary questions arising in the Eastern European context. The overall concept and hermeneutical approach developed by ten representatives of various evangelical groups will be highlighted. Special attention is given to the community-based and canon-based hermeneutics. The commentary's weaknesses as well as prospects of further development are discussed. It is expected that the hermeneutical community formed during the six years of working on this project will be able to contribute substantially to the further development of the evangelical theology in this part of the world.
