- Abstract
The article discusses works of French Renaissance literature that depict the socioeconomic conditions of their time, and scholarly criticism of them. Discussed in particular are works by François Rabelais, the Pléiade poets, the "Essais" of Michel de Montaigne, and Pierre Corneille and Charles Sorel. Analyses of these works from Marxist and other perspectives by 20th- and 21st-century critics such as Terence Cave, Henri Weber, Philippe Desan, Roland Mousnier, and Michael Moriarty are also discussed
