- Abstract
Objective: Anatomic variation of fi rst dorsal compartment including variability of the abductor pollicis longus tendon, extensor pollicis brevis tendon and secondary osseo-fi brous canal help surgeons to treated DeQuervain's disease. Material and methods: 40 patients with DeQuervain's disease were included. All patients previously receive treatment either corticosteroid injection or surgical release of fi rst dorsal compartment from diff erent hospitals. All patients have still positive Finkelstein's test. In this study we re-explore, and particular look for the origin of the accessory tendon and of the presence or absence of a secondary osseo-fi brous canal within the fi rst extensor compartment. Results: An accessory tendon of the abductor pollicis longus was found in (31)77% of wrists, though in only (5)12% wrists the accessory tendon found in a separate fi brous canal. In the remainder the abductor pollicis longus with all its accessory tendons of insertion occupied a common canal. A separate compartment for the extensor pollicis brevis was noted in (10)25% of cases. Conclusion: We conclude that knowledge of anatomic variation of fi rst dorsal compartment prevent failure in the treatment of DeQuerain disease.
