- Abstract
This article concerns the issues touched upon by Boris Mironov in his book "The Russian Empire: From Tradition to Modernity," which are connected with modernization processes in the sphere of culture and social interaction. Mironov uses the term "collective beliefs" to identify stable mass mental constructions in this sphere that are characteristic of different social groups, and he uses the concept of "cultural capital" as an important assessment of the level of development of society. L.M. Artamonova agrees with Mironov's thesis, according to which accumulation of such capital in Russia took place, first of all, on the initiative of the supreme authority, which was enlightened during all the stages of its history as it did not abandon attempts to develop public education. In her opinion, ultimately, this prepared the conditions for the implementation of serious social, economic, and administrative reforms. An obvious example is the preparation of the conditions for future abolition of serfdom and other modernizing changes in society through the development of schools. Catherine II's ideas on school reform were ahead of their time by a century or more. Artamonova supports Mirnov's view that the formation of elements of civil society in Imperial Russia began in the last third of the 18th century and provides additional arguments, in particular the rapid development of voluntary associations and the periodical press in the Russian provinces. In her opinion, Mironov's insights are thanks to diligent work with sources, including archival ones. To get reliable statistical results, the use of labor-intensive quantitative methods is often required.
