- Abstract
This article discusses the traditional instruments, instrumentation, and performance techniques of Nkwa Umuagbogho dance music in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, Southeast Nigeria. The study took a unique ethnographic approach, collecting data from extensive fieldwork, interviews, and audio-visual recordings of Nkwa Umuagbogho performances over a three-year period. This approach is novel in its ability to uncover the musical instruments, instrumentation, and performance techniques of the dance, which, until now, have not been adequately documented in existing literature. Specifically, the article sheds light on the process of instrument creation, the source materials used, the composite ensemble and sectionalisation, as well as performance approaches, and other related underlying concepts of dance music.
