- Abstract
The objective of the study was to evaluate the postoperative pain intensity of high thoracic and abdominal surgeries. It was a quantitative, cross-sectional study performed with 200 patients in the immediate postoperative period of thoracic and upper abdominal surgery in a municipal hospital in Northeastern Brazil between November 2013 and April 2014. Data collection was performed using a structured instrument composed of socioeconomic and demographic variables, health history and clinical examination, information on the surgical procedure and postoperative time, prescription, vital signs, level of consciousness and pain evaluation using the VAS graduated from 0 to 10, consisting of the following categories: 0 = no pain, 1 to 4 = mild pain, 5 to 7 = moderate pain, and 8 to 10 = severe or severe pain. The study was approved by the Ethics and Research Committee of the Federal University of Maranhão (CEP/UFMA) under the number 629,315. The data were analyzed by Statistical Analysis System-SAS software, version 9.1.3. It was possible to identify that 82 patients did not present painful episodes; and 118, presented some type of pain; of these 29 presented mild pain, 47 moderate pain, both as expected; 42 presented severe or severe pain, however from the statistical analysis it was possible to observe that of the 42 patients it was expected that 23.1 presented slow pain, nevertheless it was evidenced that only 16 presented slow pain and 26 presented fast pain. With this, it can be concluded that the presence of pain is present in the immediate postoperative period of these surgical procedures. Most of the time the administration of drug therapies for relief, predominantly Dipyrone, drug of the class of simple analgesics.
