- Abstract
Cell free culture filtrates from isolates of Rhynchosporium oryzae contained a toxin which caused flaccidity, chlorosis and wilting of leaves of rice seedlings and also retardation of root and shoot growth. There was a positive correlation between the pathogenicity of an isolate and its toxin production as assayed by both phytotoxicity on rice seedlings as well as effect on root and shoot elongation. Rice cultivars resistant to the pathogen were much less sensitive to the toxin than the susceptible cultivars. Toxin production paralleled growth of the isolates and the toxic effect of the culture filtrate was reduced, but not lost by heating by autoclaving.
