- Abstract
On 27 June 1916, Şerif Hüseyin, Emir of Mecca rebelled against the Ottomans relying on the treaty signed with Britain and declared the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. However, his son Emir Faysal entered Syria and Iraq which were occupied by the British and French troops following the World War I. Among the British archival sources, a contract could be found signed by Mustafa Kemal Pasha and Emir Faysal, on 16 June 1919, only eight months after Faysal's entrance to Syria. There are some criticisms on the possible fabrication of that contract. Mustafa Kemal Pasha states that even though he himself received the referred contract he sent it back without any approval or signature. Furthermore Mustafa Kemal Pasha expresses that in the course of the national struggle the Ankara government kept a vigilant eye on Emir Faysal, the king of Syria as well as Iraq under the auspices of Britain while supporting the upheavals against western countries in those lands. Thus, this paper aims to analyze why the contract remained unsigned.
