- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented on the 2005 Tanzanian historical novel (and what is referred to as a shadow genre novel) "Desertion," by Abdulrazak Gurnah. The book's depiction of the imperial nature of the British Empire in Africa, including the British protectorate of Zanzibar, is discussed. The portrayal of memory and desire in the novel is also discussed.
