- Authors
Cooper, Barbara T.
- Abstract
The article examines the early nineteenth-century historical plays by French dramatists, that often serve as tool for propaganda and where messages transmitted from the stage were closely supervised by the government. In this paper, the relationship between culture and politics from 1830-1831, which is depicted in the book "Napoléon Bonaparte," by Alexandre Duma and circumstances that prompted their composition are also investigated. One play being analyzed is the fiction "La Tapisserie de la reine Mathilde," which is said to exploit the history of William the Conqueror for political purposes.
