- Abstract
On prefabricated bridges Using prefabricated bridges can reduce construction time by up to 75 %, this makes their use a good solution for the replacement of deficient overpass bridges. Thus, traffic interruption can be reduced to a minimum. In Germany, the use of prefabricated bridges are still uncommon, if any, then semi‐prefabricated schemes are being used. Therefore, we would like to look into the practice in other countries and analyze how experience in the US, the Netherlands and Ireland can be utilized for the German market. It is important to note that the premise to design bridges out of a limited number of universal standard parts often leads to a less favorable appearance. This leads often to the design of an orthogonal crossing angle and therefore overly large and even clumsy design. With these in mind – and in cooperation with Straßen.NRW – Arup designed a new modular bridge system that was adopted in 2018 for two overpasses near the city of Werne. In addition to ensuring minimum construction time, special attention was paid to the aesthetic design, which this article also discusses as implemented in the two newly built bridges. The authors further discuss how the local bridge industry can adopt new accelerated bridge construction concepts to meet future mobility requirements.
