- Abstract
Through the reading of Bhima: Lone Warrior by M T Vasudevan Nair, this paper examines the indigenous marginalisation and subjugation faced by Hidimbi in Mahabharata. Analysing Hidimbi, the paper throws light on the condition of tribal women who are being negated under the Varna system and patriarchal subjugation. This paper argues that Hidimbi was highly stifled and smothered for the sole reason of being a tribal woman. This paper analyses the status, condition and repression that Hidimbi was exposed to. Interestingly, the canonical or dominant narrative of Mahabharata does not bring Pandavas under any scrutiny, particularly, with regard to their approach to the tribal community. On the contrary, Nair's work brings forth the subalternity faced by Ekalavya, Ghatotkacha, and Hidimbi. This paper uses ecofeminist theory to elucidate the exploitation met by Hidimbi. Through an ecofeminist lens, the paper attempts to understand the manner in which Hidimbi was equated to nature wherein both the ecology and the woman was equally exploited by the guardians of patriarchy. In doing so, the paper attempts to unravel the alternative narrative of Hidimbi that the canon silences.
