- Abstract
In the book "Sorting Machines. The Reinvention of Borders in the 21st Century" by Steffen Mau, it is made clear that borders do not disappear, but on the contrary, become increasingly present. The author argues that globalization and border security are closely linked and refutes the notion of an increasingly borderless world. Mau analyzes the functions, technologies, and impacts of borders and emphasizes that borders continue to exist despite the disappearance of walls and fences. He also examines the effects of borders on mobility and shows that freedom of movement for some is bought at the expense of restrictions for others. The book also addresses new developments such as "smart borders" and the increased formation of macro-territories with intergovernmental mobility regimes. Mau argues that borders today are complex and internationalized sorting machines that connect legal regulations, data, and technologies. The book offers a condensed and rich exploration of the topic of borders and is a worthwhile read for historians who also want to learn about the political present.
