- Abstract
The present volume "Kleine Fürsten" in the Holy Roman Empire examines the structures and social practices of imperial princes who, due to the limited size of their territories, were unable to expand their dominions into a "state". The focus is on the fact that the distinction between "great" and "small" princes is not as simple as it is often portrayed. The hierarchy of the imperial princely dynasties was not only based on the size of the territory, but also on other criteria such as the age of the dynasty, self-presentation, military and political achievements. Successful marriage alliances could also give dynasties of second or third rank a key position among European ruling houses. The study provides important insights into the world of "Kleine Fürsten" and their development from the late Middle Ages to the end of the Holy Roman Empire.
