- Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to point out special importance of knowing general developmental patterns of the child by each pedagogical employee, with particular emphasis on the music field. The paper emphasizes the importance of the fundamental professional competences in music pedagogue's work, relating not only to the field of music, but also to the field of educational psychology and music psychology. It particularly highlights the importance of the developmental psychology of music that represents a new relationship between developmental psychology and music education. Knowledge of the basic patterns of child's cognitive development also forms the basis for understanding the cognitive models of child's musical development. Through critical review of basic cognitive theories of musical development: Gardner's Theory of Artistic Development (1973), Gordon's Music Learning Theory (1977), Swanwick's and Tilman's Spiral Theory of Musical Development (1986), Cognitive Theory of M.L .Serafine, (1988), and J. Bamberger's Theory of Developmental Cumulation (1991), it was concluded that there are cognitive stages of child's musical development, but not in the sense of universal stages of Piaget type. The paper reveals strong correlation and mutual interaction between psychology and education, as well as the teacher's role of pedagogue and psychologist, which is particularly emphasized through the principles and philosophy of contemporary education. With the knowledge of general and musical patterns of child's development, the teacher, as a reflective practitioner, will more easily be able to spot certain aberrations in the child's developmental process and through critical thinking and evaluation adapt his work to the needs of each individual child. In this way he will contribute to the improvement of the quality both of the general and contemporary musical educational system.
