- Abstract
Despite advances in medical sciences over the last decades of twentieth century had allowed a greater success in the treatment of oncologic diseases, cancer remains to be one of the biggest fears of humanity. Myths and preconceptions persist in relation to cancer that reverts in negative attitudes, that in turn, in the case of the health professionals, can condition the quality of care. The formative process and the pedagogical strategies used can be an effective way to modify preconceptions, and to assure that the negative attitudes do not compromise the nature and the quality of care. The main purpose of this research was to study the social representations of cancer in nursing students. This analysis allowed us to infer that most of the students do not express a pessimistic or fatalist perspective of cancer, and also expressed the opinion that oncologic illness is not confined to body biology, for that care should be supported in a relational base, presenting raised levels of agreement with the relevance of the social support.
