- Title
Perfect Pumpkin Pollinators The Squash Bees!
- Authors
Wood, Marcia; Flores, Alfredo
- Abstract
The article discusses the ability of native bees of the genera Peponapis and Xenoglossa to pollinate pumpkins. The entomologists Jim Crane, Frank Eischen, and Blair Sampson are discussed in regard to support of the functions of these insects. Cane is focused on in particular, as he has launched a collaboration of bee biologists to conduct a survey on the species. Research associated with this survey implies that this may be the first discovery of a nonsocial bee playing a key role in the production of an agricultural crop. The bees also pollinate cucurbit relatives of pumpkins, including gourds and squash.
