- Title
Ghetto Blues: The Organizational Street Culture of Black "Masculine" Gang Members in a White World.
- Authors
Towns, Armond R.
- Abstract
This article brings understanding to the culture that African-Americans from an inner city New Jersey neighborhood live in and are accustomed to, and posits why this culture makes the illegal organization of street gangs attractive to these African-Americans. Also, four themes that emerged from the research will be given emphasis throughout this work: Fatherless, but not Loveless, Leaderless Leaders, Shoot First, ask Questions Last, and Cash Rules Everything. Backing these themes and findings are two main theories: Black Masculinity Identity Theory and Co-Cultural Theory. "Black gang member masculinity" and the "co-cultural" world these gang members are forced to live in daily play a huge part in their illegal behavior.
