- Title
Just Another Report, or a Sea Change for Ocean Research?
- Authors
Gropp, Robert E.
- Abstract
The article presents the author's views regarding the report "Charting the Course for Ocean Science in the United States for the Next Decade: An Ocean Research Priorities Plan and Implementation Strategy," prepared by the U.S. National Science and Technology Council's Joint Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology (JSOST) and released on January 26, 2007. The author stated that the report lacked a clear statement of the required federal financial commitment to ocean research. He offered speculations as to whether the ocean sciences community will fully embrace the plan and work to ensure that the funds are provided to achieve its ambitious goals and whether other research communities will strive to coordinate and define similar community-wide research programs.
