- Abstract
The article "Planning conflicts in pluralistic democracy: agonistic planning between theory and practice" deals with the challenges of spatial planning in pluralistic democracies. It is shown that the increase in planning conflicts poses a dilemma for planning authorities. On the one hand, there is a demand for acceleration of approval procedures, on the other hand, there is an increase in the expectations for public participation in the planning process. In international planning theory, the importance of conflicts is emphasized through agonistic approaches, which view conflicts as inherent and positive. Various approaches to conflict resolution in planning are discussed, with agonistic and collaborative planning often seen as opposing approaches, although they can complement each other. The contribution by Valentin Domann, Henning Nuissl, and Antonie Schmiz examines local conflicts based on localist discourses and demonstrates the usefulness of agonistic democratic theory for practice.
