- Abstract
It is observed that ceramics, one of the plastic and visual communication arts, a domain which describes and superficially and three-dimensionally interprets verbal elements such as concepts, ideas, and text in terms of design principles and elements, is also used in medical education, as it is in many fields. Ceramic art is an interdisciplinary domain juxtaposed by education, art disciplines, science, technology and chemistry. For this reason, ceramics education plays a crucial and prominent role to make the theoretical knowledge and experience in health more understandable and comprehensible by transforming them into visibility and three dimensions. Besides the use of the traditional methods of art in conveying information through superficial and three dimensional visualization in medical education, the expression methods more enriched by today's technological possibilities has increased the interest in ceramics. This interest is reflected in contemporary education and art education as the acquisition of purpose to make individuals acquire skills along with the transfer of the information, to develop their potential and talents through science and technology, and to reach individuals and societies capable of creating new products in the intellectual, artistic and cultural fields. Ceramics education the medical students take is provided jointly by other art disciplines. This education has been revealed to contribute to aesthetics, psycho-motor skills and creative thinking processes in previous studies by authors. In this study, seven students' works were randomly selected out of the works of 12 female and 10 male students among Faculty of Medicine, Inonu University, Term I and II students who have attended to ceramics education course for the first time. Accordingly, ceramic works were assessed in terms of construction techniques, form, ornamentation, color characteristics and narrative language, while plastic arts were evaluated in terms of analysis methods and self-expression. At the end of the ceramics training, the qualitative questionnaire developed by three experts was administered to the medical students and the findings were presented in tables. Accordingly, it is also highlighted medical students' opinion that the different skills they gain though ceramic education may have an influence in determining the areas of specialization in the future.
