- Title
The National Discourse of the Bulgarian Communist Party on National Anniversaries and Commemorations (1944-1948).
- Authors
Sygkelos, Yannis
- Abstract
The article seeks to shed light on the national discourse of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP) in respect to the domain of culture. Particular attention is paid to the topic of anniversaries and commemorations through which the communist regime presented Bulgarian history as a linear progression toward a new era and as the rightful heirs of national traditions. It is argued that the BCP attempted to reinterpret the national identity, reshape collective memory, and propagandize communist achievements. The BCP's ties to Stalinist Russia and their national policy were articulated during commemorations through party instructions, resolutions, directives, school circulars, leaflets and books.
