- Abstract
The article discusses Revival of Contemplative Nuns in Nineteenth-Century France. Topics include monastic life in France arose from the ashes of the Revolution following the fall of Napoleon and the restoration of a French monarchy sympathetic to Catholicism in 1815. In 1815, anti-clerical forces within the governing parliament kept contemplative monastic communities like the Trappists unauthorized by French law and yet these communities returned with unexpected vigor.
