- Title
Pumping Up the Word with Cinematic Supplements.
- Authors
Lundeen, Kathleen
- Abstract
The article examines the two cinematic speech, the subtitles and pantomime. Both are enlisted as visual supplements to speech to make it more accessible. It stated that their presence in a film underscores the lack of parity between work and image in film, and shows how in some instances the spoken word is only tolerated when converted into a visible sign. Meanwhile, the film "Life Is Beautiful" is a mistranslated speech that provides a levity for viewers and a moment of sublimity. It shows a father's attempt to shield his young son from the horrors of a German concentration camp in which they are both captive.
