- Abstract
In the second half of 2023, South Australian state politics was dominated by the national Voice to Parliament referendum debate, which overshadowed other significant events such as a rural MP defecting from the Liberal Party and a proposed merger between the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia. Despite the state's pivotal role in the referendum campaign, South Australia ultimately delivered a majority 'No' vote. However, the state government remains committed to implementing its own state-based voice to Parliament. The Liberal Party also faced challenges in retaining rural MPs, with one member defecting to the crossbench. The proposed merger between the two universities received support from both institutions, and a committee was formed to review the process and make recommendations. The government secured support for the merger legislation after implementing some of the committee's suggestions. The success of the merger will depend on its impact on research, teaching, and student enrollment. The text also briefly mentions changes in the South Australian Legislative Council and policy challenges in areas such as health, family violence, and housing.
