- Abstract
The study chiefly aimed to compare the morphological characteristics of elite European and Slovenian female basketball players aged between 14 and 15, and to establish the similarities and differences in their morphological profiles. For this purpose, a sample was formed, consisting of 62 female basketball players aged 14.79 (±0.41) years, of whom 35 were from different European countries competing in Division A of the European Championship and 27 were Slovenian players competing in Division B of the European Championship. The results show that, on the whole, the Division A players were statistically significantly taller and heavier than the Slovenian players. A more detailed analysis shows that the Division A players were taller on average than the Slovenian players in all three playing positions. In terms of individual somatotype components, the smallest differences were observed among forwards, whereas the differences between guards and particularly centres are particularly large. Although the guards and centres of Division A perform better, they have a higher share of fat mass and a lower share of muscle mass on average compared to the Slovenian players. Evidently, in the area of morphological dimensions, body height is the dimension which most clearly differentiates between high-performing players and those with lesser playing ability.
