- Abstract
The soil is an eco sys tem and the habitat of numerous diverse micro organisms, whose enzymes play the central role in soil metabolic activity. The term healthy soil implies an ecological approach to studying the environment with the aim of obtaining high, top-quality crop yields while maintaining a biological balance in nature. Micro or ganisms account for 60-90% of all soil metabolic activity. They help supply plants with the basic biogenic elements (N, P, K), produce bioactive substances, degrade pesticides and are indicators of high levels of heavy metals as well as of soil compaction and waterlogging. Dominance of certain microbial groups slows down the processes of synthesis and degradation and determines the quality of a soil for safe food production. Microbial abundance, enzymatic activity and biodiversity are indicators of soil health/ quality. The objective of our study was to monitor microbial activity in different soil types and indications of mineral fertilizer use, tillage, pesticides, high heavy metal presence, disturbances occurring due to soil compaction, etc. Presence of coliform bacteria is an indicator of soil sanitary quality or a general indicator of sanitary conditions in the environment.
