- Abstract
The article presents a case study, which discusses social aspects of economic development during the early modern period in the southern Netherlands town of Nivelles directly preceding the advent of the industrial revolution. Other topics discussed in the article include the urbanization from the bottom-up in Nivelle, which did not diminish widespread poverty and inequality, the analysis of Malthusian effects on redistributive economic growth, and the living standards of 19th century factory workers.
