- Abstract
In the book "Out of Control. Germany 1923," Peter Longerich examines the state crisis of the Weimar Republic in 1923. The occupation of the Ruhr area, hyperinflation, internal unrest, and uprisings pushed Germany to the brink of civil war. After the failure of the Hitler-Ludendorff Putsch and the currency reform, the crisis came to an end. The author analyzes the developments of the crisis year and particularly considers the role of Chief of the Army Command Hans von Seeckt. Longerich establishes a connection between Seeckt's plans and the coup preparations of the "Black Reichswehr." The book provides an overview of the year 1923 and offers explanatory approaches to the causes and escalation of the crisis.
