- Abstract
Brief Background: The aim is to study the influence of pins on the fracture resistance of silver amalgam and hybrid composite resin restorative materials. Materials and Methods: 120 cylindrical spheres of 6 mm diameter and 8 mm height were made using a brass die. They were divided into 60 for each spheroidal silver amalgam and 60 for composite resin. They were further divided into 20 with no pins, 20 two pins and 20 with four pins. They were tested for fracture resistance after 24 hours. Data was evaluated statistically using Student's t Test. Results: Statistical analysis of fracture resistance was measured using with Instron Universal Testing Machine at cross head speed 0.5 mm per min. There was statistically significant difference showing the decrease in the fracture resistance of both the restorative materials with the increase in the number of pins. Summary and Conclusions: Within limitations of this study it can be concluded that the fewest number of pins compatible in providing fracture resistance should be used to avoid excessive weakening of the restoration.
