- Abstract
This article discusses the role of structural similarity in third language acquisition (L3). It explores the concept of cross-linguistic influence (CLI) and the potential sources of CLI in L3 acquisition. The article presents three models that explain the role of structural similarity in L3 acquisition: the Typological Primacy Model, the Linguistic Proximity Model, and the Scalpel Model. It also highlights five articles in the issue that provide empirical data and insights on the role of structural similarity in L3 acquisition, focusing on phonology, morphosyntax, or both. The article concludes by emphasizing the need for more theoretical work and empirical data to better understand the concept of structural similarity in L3 acquisition.
