As the world itself ages rapidly, all the countries must get ready for this demographic trend.. When it is planned services which will given to geriatric population it should be known by family physician and health authorities that target population's characteristics. In our study, it's aimed to evaluate the sociodemografic features of population ages 65 and above living in Burdur province. Using AHBS (Family Practice Information System) and BSOOP(Burdur Health Centers Automation System), data describing geriatric population is obtained by researchers in October 2009. It splits 49.8% male and 50.2% female, 254.422 live in Burdur. The population ages 65 and above 32.676 (12.8%) live in Burdur. Women set off 56% of geriatric population. Dependent population ratio is 48.5%. In for male's education level is high, about half of the population ages 65 and above living in Burdur is consist of primary school graduate. But 64.5% of population's education status is not recorded. Considering social security; the most of the people aged 65 and above is BağKur's (36.9%). The population ages 65 and above live in proportionaly the most Yeşilova county, at least Bucak county. A great majority of geriatric population (65.5%) is married and 30.6% is widowed. Female/Male ratio in widows is 5; and 56.1% of geriatric population live in urban. The proportion of people aged 65 and above living in Burdur is much more then Turkey's average and the population in Burdur is aging quickly. That the median age in both men and women is higher in Burdur than the avarage in Turkey supports this case.Turkey's population pyramid doesn't coincide with that of Burdur. It is seen that this trend will go on and elderly population will get ahead of 0-14 age group. Data quality should be raised in order for family psysicians and health authorities to recognise their own population and assess in a healthy way. Both family physicians and health authorities should be aware of the demographic change and make preparations to meet health and care needs of the elderly population.
