- Abstract
The article discusses the encounters of Scottish Protestant missionaries and orientalist scholars John Wilson, John Murray Mitchell, and John Stevenson, leading figures of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (BAS), with Jains and Jainism in Bombay, India in the nineteenth century. It comments on Stevenson's translation of the Jain text the Kalpa Sutra and interactions with Svetambara Jains. Other topics include the religious diversity of Bombay, beliefs concerning the relationship of Jainism to Buddhism and Hinduism, and the anti-Catholicism and anti-clericalism of Scottish missionaries.
