- Abstract
Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC), commonly known as a "yeast infection," is a vaginal fungal disease that affects women between the ages of 20 and 50. It is estimated that 75% of women will experience at least one episode of vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), with 5% to 10% developing RVVC. Recent global analyses suggest that 138 million women are affected by RVVC annually, with significant impacts on quality of life and economic productivity. The causes and mechanisms of RVVC are not fully understood, but recent developments in Candida taxonomy, diagnosis methods, and treatment options show promise in improving outcomes for patients. However, more research and advocacy are needed to prioritize women's health and address the challenges in diagnosing and treating RVVC effectively.
