- Authors
Moffett, Sandra L.
- Abstract
The article focuses on managing patients at risk of overwhelming postsplenectomy infection (OPSI). It is stated that the patients who are asplenic, either because of the absence of a spleen or functional splenic compromise, are at an increased risk of contracting OPSI. OPSI is commonly described as a fulminant bacteremia that develops very quickly and carries a high mortality rate. A committed collaboration between patient and provider will assure the best for the patient's good health.
