- Title
The Evolution of Generosity: How Natural Selection Builds Devices for Benefit Delivery.
- Authors
McCullough, Michael E.; Pedersen, Eric J.
- Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between evolution and altruism. Particular focus is given to the natural selection of mechanisms which deliver benefits to other organisms. The authors explore the concept of inclusive fitness, in which a benefit-delivering allele, or gene variant, promotes either the direct reproductive success of an organism or the reproductive success of other organisms which share the same allele. Details on the concept of group selection are also presented. It is suggested that human social institutions such as laws and charitable organizations harness and amplify naturally-selected tendencies towards altruism. Other topics include reciprocity, group augmentation, parental care, and kin discrimination.
