- Title
Flachs statt Carbon in Composites: UNTERNEHMEN: BMW.
- Abstract
BMW is using flax instead of carbon for some components in its current Formula E race car, the BMW iFE.20. Compared to carbon fibers, the natural fiber flax offers higher damping and impact resistance, which brings advantages on the bumpy city circuits of Formula E. The new materials were developed by BMW M Motorsport partner Bcomp Ltd. and will also be used in other BMW models. The combination of flax and carbon allows for a reduction of up to 70% in the amount of plastic used and a decrease in CO2 emissions of up to 60%. This results in more sustainable vehicle components that increase safety compared to conventional composite materials.
