- Title
From the Self to Oneself: Subject and Interiority in Spinoza.
- Authors
Jaquet, Chantal
- Abstract
The article discusses the writing of Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza, who authored Descartes' "Principles of Philosophy" and 'Ethics'. It particularly looks at the use of subject in Spinoza's writing, and how it is often plural in nature. The article argues that his philosophy is that of the subject, and the subject is the substance. It notes that Spinoza never uses 'me' and rarely 'I' as the subject in his sentences. The article then uses this to ask what it means to be oneself.
