The Presence of the Absent in Interpretation.
- Authors
Gracia, Jorge J. E.
- Abstract
This essay explores the ways in which the interpretation of a work of art or literature provides information that is not present in the work itself. Particular focus is given to philosopher Michel Foucault's interpretation of the painting "Las Meninas" by Diego Velázquez, artist Héctor Destéfanis's interpretation of Jorge Luis Borges's story "The Gospel According to Mark" in the painting "La decisión de los Guthre" (The Guthres' Decision) and artist Ricardo Celma's interpretation of the same story in the painting "El evangelio según Borges" (The Gospel According to Borges). Topics discussed include representation, Foucault's concept of the gaze, and Christianity.
