- Abstract
The article discusses the claim of the Whanganui Māori people to the Whanganui River in New Zealand, or Aoteaora, examining the Whanganui River Inquiry undertaken by the commission the Waitangi Tribunal. It particularly considers moral, political, and philosophical aspects of the claim. The author comments on indigeneity and indigenous difference in the nation of New Zealand. She also reflects on native title and customary title. Other topics include the idea of "belonging" to the river and sacred and ancestral aspects of the claim.
