- Abstract
The article offers information on the growth requirements of Porphyridium cruentum. It states that this algae is up to the present only cultivated with difficulty. It also mentions that this algae grows healthily when at least 25% of sea water is added to a mineral agar medium. The development shows itself first by active gliding movement of the cells, followed by plenteous multiplication. Moreover, the ecological and physiological significances of this phenomenon are discussed, and other instances are recorded with algae, living distant from the sea, are favored by an admixture of sea water.
