The chemical potential of a binary solution is calculated using the Gibbs free energy method. With the aid of certain assumptions on the microscopic structure of the solution, the wellknown expression is derived for a simple solution. It is shown that the empirical interaction parameter is expressed in terms of the change in enthalpy and entropy accompanying the exchange of atoms between the pure components.
