- Authors
Patterson, James A.
- Abstract
The article discusses the contribution of the 19th-century Baptist preacher and journalist James Robinson Graves to the promotion of ecclesiology in the U.S. It says that the idiosyncratic ecclesiology of Graves were shaped by the values of individualism and aversion to ideas of tyranny. The preacher reportedly referred to religious principles that are more related to polity than doctrine. Also noted is the impact of Graves's subordination to ecclesiology regarding the identity and lineage of the Baptist tradition.
