- Abstract
An essay is presented discussing the development of archives in libraries in 17th century England. It describes the work of natural historians and antiquaries to preserve manuscripts, the development of institutional archives, and the development of techniques to preserve manuscripts. The preservation processes of covering books, transcribing old manuscripts to fresh paper or vellum, and the transfer of works from hide-bound books to paper are also discussed.
