- Abstract
Leaders from West Africa recently met in Abuja, Nigeria for a summit to address the political instability in the Sahel region. The summit focused on the dual threats of a growing jihadist movement and dissatisfaction with governance in member nations. The African political landscape has seen a rise in military coups and civilian insurrections, with countries like Gabon, Mali, Guinea, Sudan, Chad, and Burkina Faso experiencing unrest. The role of international players, such as former colonial powers and regional organizations like ECOWAS, in influencing these events is a topic of debate. ECOWAS has enacted sanctions and threatened military intervention in Niger to restore civilian rule, and the withdrawal of French troops from the Sahel has raised concerns about the spread of jihadist violence. The international community can play a role in stabilizing the region through diplomatic engagement, economic development, aid, and support for local governments.
