- Abstract
The article reports on the continued search by researchers of the clinical benefit in raising levels of the good cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). At a presentation at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions held in Orlando, Florida in November 2011, the therapeutic potential of niacin was questioned based on results from the Atherothromobis Intervention in Metabolic Syndrome With Low HDL/High Triglycerides: Impact on Global Health Outcomes (AIM-HIGH) trial. In a separate randomized trial, researchers found the efficacy of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) inhibitor evacetrapib in raising HDL-C levels and lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels compared with placebo or statin monotherapy.
